Landguard Fort

Buildings on the site of the Fort have existed since the 16th century; it has seen use as a guard against French invasion and later used as defences in World War One and Two. A few years ago, explorers heard "unexplained" noises during an excursion in the Fort. A ghostly coach is said to cross a ditch next to the fort where there used to be a drawbridge and a lone musketeer is seen on ramparts - dogs have behaved strangely in this area, too. A famous ghost is that of "Maria" who weeps and mutters in Portuguese; she is supposed to be the wife of a paymaster sergeant and she was accused of stealing a silken handkerchief by the other wives who didnt like her. Her husband was told to deal with the situtation and left the fort for a few days to determine the truth. When he returned he was accused of desertion and shot by firing squad. His wife threw herself off the ramparts in grief. Another phantom is that of a soldier who died in isolation in the bastion after he contracted a foreign illness and he has been heard crying for his mother. Other phenomena include people report being pushed on the upper levels. There are many other stories too!
