The Sun Hotel

Voices have been heard outside guest's windows, items (such as the dumb waiter) seemingly move by themselves and people have reported having their shins knocked and hearing clacking wood near the car park where there used to be a bowling alley. A body has been felt lying across the faces of sleeping guests in room 10, nearly suffocating them. In this same room, a guest woke to find a figure in black with claw like hands standing over his bed. The ghost of Lord Havisham has been reported here, carrying a fish under his arm (!) - he committed suicide here after he faced crippling gambling debts. A phantom monk has also been seen, and a former barmaid reported seeing a figure "helping himself to a drink."

Update October 2022 In late October 2022, I stopped at this hotel for a few nights for my birthday. Naturally, I could resist asking about any recent paranormal events. The receptionist said that it was all quiet, apart from "Tim" or "Tom", a little boy who had been heard running across the ballroom. The story is that he was thrown off a fire escape by a housemaid. The receptionist admitted that if anything had happened to guests they were not necessarily told about this, but she did say that some people, including "grown men" had been so alarmed by ... something... that they had resorted to sleeping in their cars in the early hours of the morning. The next night, I spoke to another member of staff, Oscar; he knew of the story of the little boy but didn't know his name; in this version he had fallen off the fire escape. The previous month, Oscar had been doing his nightly round to make sure that the fire escapes had been closed etc when he found himself in the ballroom. He noticed a moving shadow in the corner and as he walked towards it, it suddenly stopped. Then as he walked into this strange shadow, it disappeared. He had also heard of the story of three robbers who had been hanged under the archway and their ghosts are said to appear at the Inn; Oscar also told me of a monk named "Jim" who has been blamed for breakages in the cellar. The hotel loaned me a reference book entitled "The Story of the Sun Hotel, Hitchin (1575-1945) by Reginald L.Hine and none of the stories above are mentioned in it.
