Knocking Knoll

Nr. Pirton, Hertfordshire SG5 3LB

It is said that on moonlit nights, a figure wearing armour and carrying a sword walks towards the mound; when he reaches it, he bangs on the side, listens and then vanishes. According to local legend, he is an ancient ruler who checks that his treasure is still safely buried; he once appeared when archaeologists arrived and excavated the mound looking for riches, but to no avail (some versions say that he is buried with his treasure). Another local legend says that "three loud and distinct knocks are heard" from the earthwork at certain periods.
