Woburn Abbey

An invisible phantom has been reported in the chambers of the house; a door flies open and slams shut, footsteps can be heard moving across the floor and then a door on the opposite side of the room opens and then closes. There are also stories of the sensation of wet hands touching people's faces while another causes "an icy draught" on the face. In the grounds, especially near the summerhouse is the spectre of Lady Mary du Caurroy Russell (nee Tribe) who lived here and who later died indulging in her new hobby of aviation when her plane crashed in East Anglia in 1937. Additionally, the 6th Duchess of Woburn, an inhabitant of the 16th century, has been seen in one of the reception rooms, but the most intriguing ghost is a brown (?) blurry shape, said by some to be a monk who is said to have been seen in the Butler's Pantry. A spectral servant is claimed, too; burglars half strangled him and locked him in a room while they searched for loot. When they had finished, they drowned him in a lake nearby. In the 1980s, a guide who assisted visitors was taking a break in the undercroft when she saw a man in white walking nearby (white being the colour of the habits of the Cistercian order.) A cleaner tasked with cleaning glass areas in the crypt saw "a white figure of a woman floating along the edge of the room"; the figure soon vanished. The same employee also felt an unexplained cold draught and the curator often heard the sound of pages being turned while in her office. A workman also saw a monk walk through a wall in the same crypt area. There are many other stories too and a claimed tally of nine phantoms!

Update 10/9/20: Emma Brophy, head of marketing and PR informed me, "As far as we are aware there are no substantiated sightings of ghosts at Woburn Abbey."
