Oliver Cromwell's House

Cromwell himself is said to haunt this house - described as a "brooding male presence" in one of the bedrooms, and he may be responsible for the pacing sounds heard on the upper floor and the cold draughts felt in the building. Another spectre is a woman in a long blue dress with keys hanging from her waist, while in one of the bedrooms, a grey figure was once observed and at one time, a man in the house had his shoe laces untied! Other phantoms are said to include soldiers from the Civil War era, as well as footsteps followed by a door opening and closing by itself, and strange smells.

Update 6/8/20: Karen-Emma White Tourism Sales and Events Officer informs me, "In 2010 a visitor contacted the team to say that her daughter had asked to leave the house and had been uncharacteristically distressed about being in the building. On returning home the child had told her mother that whilst sitting in Mrs Cromwell's Parlour, a little girl had sat next to her and attempted to interact with her. The daughter knew no one else was in the room with them and had become distressed at what she could see. Last year one of the Tourist Information Team reported seeing objects from the shop moving across the room and has since had other encounters. Other staff have reported strange noises and feeling so uncomfortable that they have had to leave the house. I myself have experienced the office door opening and slamming by itself a couple of times since I started in post at the end of January."
