Nunnery Gateway

Nunnery Drive, Thetford, Norfolk IP24 2PZ

It is said that every night at 11 p.m. a phantom chariot conveying the ghost of Queen Elizabeth I passes through the gateway (though there are no claimed witnesses of course). Every time the gate is blocked up, the coach and horses (lacking heads in some accounts) demolishes the barrier. A version of the story says that Elizabeth, during her lifetime, passed under the arch to visit Sir Richard Fulmerstone, who lived nearby. However, the arch dates to about 1600 and Fulmerstone had been dead for decades!
