The Three Tuns

Reputed to have as many as 20 ghosts, the alleged spectres include a servant girl, Lizzie Bowlynge, who was chained in the cellar and left to starve to death after stealing a jug of ale; there is also Rex Bacon who stole money from a nearby church run by his father Rev John Hacon (or Bacon) and then murdered his wife and another man when he discovered them having an affair, and then hanged himself on the landing in remorse. His ghost has been seen hanging and laughing and a previous manager nicknamed him "Charlie Boy" as she saw him very often. To add to this catalogue of phantoms, there is also supposed to be a ghostly monk, a highwayman (Tom Hardy who frequented the pub) and shadowy figures. Another (?) ghost re-arranges furniture, opens and closes windows and doors, switches off lights, and knocks trays of food from people's hands. There has also been the the smell of pipe tobacco, the unexplained sound of voices and doors opening and shutting - and, in response to a landlord's flatulence, a loud "ripping noise"! It is said that, "In 1969 the pub hired a professional exorcist, Canon Pearce Higgins, who claimed to have got rid of all the ghosts." Obviously he was unsuccessful.
