Maxstoke Castle

The staircase is said to be haunted; it is here that a member of a family killed his brother in an altercation over a bag of gold. A door in the castle also flies open at midnight, without explanation. A 2024 newspaper also added another addition to the spectral entourage, namely the wife of previous owner Ward Dilke, Mary. She was said to be temperamental and her portrait hangs in the library. She died in the 17th century after reportedly falling down the staircase in the Lady Tower. In 2026 a newspaper interview with owner Edwina Fetherston-Dilke described Ward as "a bit of a wrong 'un due to gambling and ladies of the night. It's thought that she got fed up and threw his last bag of gold into the moat. He was so angry, he pushed her down the stairs." Although Edwina had not seen Mary, she reported that the ghost was known to scatter the children's toys around the bottom of the tower. Mary never ventures into their home but keeps herself to herself in the tower.
