Burgh Castle

A figure in white has been seen falling from the battlements; the fort is Roman in origin and was taken over by a Danish chieftain named Gonard when they left. He lured Siberg, a Saxon nobleman to the fort where he was imprisoned and his men were butchered when they tried to rescue him. Siberg suspected treachery and had called on his half-brother Cerdrag before he was incarcerated. Cerdrag besieged the fort and in the battle, Siberg killed Gonard but was then killed himself. Not knowing that Gonard was dead, Cerdrag sent an aide to demand his release; the emissary was killed and his body, wrapped in a flag, was hurled from the walls. In the ensuing carnage, the Danish forces were massacred. The ghost of the Saxon messenger is reputed to appear on July 3rd, the anniversary of the skirmish.
