Five Bells

When this was a pub, the ghost was nicknamed "Henry", supposedly one of the first landlords in the 1750s who had a reputation as a trouble maker and loved "messing" with the younger barmaids. By 2018, there were a multitude of inexplicable occurrences; he was blamed for leaving the odour of pipe smoke in one of the rooms (the ghost stopped when the landlady told him it wasn't allowed and he had to go outside); making spoons hanging on the wall sway violently; hurling boxes of beer across the cellar; turning off the gas to the pumps; and perhaps alerting the staff to problems with the lavatory which, left unchecked, would have resulted in the toilet falling through the floor. There are/were other phantoms reported- a young boy aged about 5 or 6 and dressed in blue; a monk around the back of the pub by the graveyard (chanting has been heard beneath the ladies toilets too); a lady in the courtyard; and a nun who walked through the kitchen walls. Whether Henry and his spectral cohorts are still active is not known.
