The Crown Hotel

12 Bridge Street, Downham Market, Norfolk PE38 9DH

Sounds of a party at 3am coming from an unoccupied room have been heard here, and on at least one occasion, a guest awoke to find a "deformed child" bending over him.

Update 24/9/24: Graham Philpot told me that in a conversation with the landlord, "[the deformed child] has never been seen or reported since (to his knowledge). Instead, he thinks it may be 'Emily', a young lady that was murdered in that bedroom in the 1700s. He told me that he often hears her moving about up there when he's in the place on his own. He's also seen glimpses of her a couple of times - once on the landing and once in the restaurant as he went in to clear up after a busy trading day. He described her as having a 'bonnet' but is 'hazy' and the sighting lasts for less than a second as she instantly disappears. Other members of staff have also heard noises from above or fleeting glances. But yes, no-one has ever said anything to him about a child being there." When asked if he mentioned the room number, I was told, "No, he didn't say, but it was one directly above the old bar in the original part of the pub (1400s I think)." Incidentally, when I spoke to the barman in May 2024 he said that nothing had been experienced apart from the sounds that one normally associates with an old building.
