The Bloody Steps

The sad looking male spectre seen here is said to be Robert Collins, who haunts the place where his wife Christina was brought ashore after she was found in the canal (see also Hoo Mill Lock, where she has been seen). In 1839, she was a passenger on a freight-carrying boat en route to meet her husband but members of the crew raped her and murdered her, throwing her body overboard; two of the crew were executed while a third was transported. It is also reported that children wearing Victorian clothing have been seen here as dusk falls.
