Bridge 39

A form resembling "a huge, black, hairy monkey" with enormous eyes has been seen on the bridge by barges which traverse the canal; it is said that this is supposed to a boatman who drowned here in the 19th century. Many years ago, the creature jumped out of the undergrowth by the bridge and jumped onto the back of a horse carrying a labourer. He lashed out with his whip but it went right through the figure and he fell off the horse in fright.
