A phantom is said to haunt the cellars; the pub used to brew beer and a worker was killed when he fell into a boiling vat; another version is that a tramp, who had been found sleeping rough on the premises was thrown into a brewing vat. During alteration work bricks were removed and stacked neatly to reveal an archway while the builders were away. In addition, people have been kicked down the stairs.
