The Lifeboat Inn

Ship Lane, Thornham, Norfolk, PE36 6LT
01485 500900

In the late 1990s, Annie and Charles Coker took on the running of the Lifeboat Inn, which dates back to the 16th century. For sales reasons, she decided that it needed a ghost story to entice customers, and came up with the following tale; "should the oak door creak open and a tall stranger arrive with a cape and a cutlass, it would hardly be a surprise." Coincidentally or presciently, people did indeed soon report "fleeting glimpses" of such a figure in the Smuggler’s Bar (though whether he was adorned with a cutlass is not recorded)! There may be another phantom, but details are scant: ‘Phoebe’ has been seen trying to give away beer!
