St Botolph's Church

Church Street, Boston, Lincolnshire PE21 6NW
01205 310929

In 1585, Sarah Preston "entertained" a sailor while her husband was away - but her temporary partner had brought the plague with him. She was blamed for the ensuing death toll and in her misery ran to the church, yelling "Pestilence!" and then threw herself to her death from the tower. It is said that during the autumn months, her cries and the re-enactment of her plunge have been experienced. Another phantom here is "The Grey Lady" - another woman who threw herself to her death soon after her husband passed away; she leapt to her fate carrying her newborn baby. It is said that if you walk around the church three times at midnight she will appear to you. In addition, an organist heard and recorded footsteps in the church too.
