The Black Lion29 Welsh Row, Nantwich, Cheshire CW5 5ED 01270 628711 I am grateful to Fortean researcher Carla Staton for informing me of this location, which featured on the BBC and Facebook in February 2025. Footsteps have been heard in the courtyard (which prompted a lady who was partaking in a beverage to turn in response and saw nothing as did her companion). The head chef Lucy also talked of hearing footsteps, knocking or creaking noises when she was on her own. She even thought she saw a figure when she was walking along a coridor but when she looked back there was no one there. Landlord Darren Snell talked of "little things that can't be explained" and recounted one of them - a staff member had taken a bottle of wine from the fridge and was pouring it when it seemed to be snatched out of her hand, moved to the left and fell on the floor. The remainder of the feature talked of "shadows passing by and marbles being rolled across floorboards" and mentioned Charlie (the name given to the pub ghost) who was particularly active over the Battle of Nantwich weekend, when the pub had a couple of reports from Sealed Knot soldiers who believed the unexplained instances could be "a dear departed comrade." Both Lucy and Dennis said of their incumbent phantom, "it's a playful, friendly ghost who means no harm." With regards to historical incidents, in the 1950s the residents were awakened by a crash coming from downstairs. Fearing an intruder, all that could be found was a picture that had fallen off the wall and broken. The same picture had falled off 4 years previously and in the same spot. |
