A newspaper clipping from 1993 states that a young serving maid from the 18th century has been seen here, sitting quietly next to the fire late at night.

Update 27/2/22: The hotel responded to my Facebook query about any recent phenomena: "We've has plenty of encounters in our last 3 years then checked with previous landlords and all checks out. This place definitely has its characters." On 3/1/24 I recontacted the hotel and was told by Lee that they had plenty of instances of ghosts being encountered by many people and that "we can confirm we are one of the most haunted pubs in the Peak District." However he would only discuss occurrences face to face which was an impossibility considering the travelling distances involved.
