The mansion is said to be haunted by a girl who drowned in a well while in the process of concealing jewelery within, which were to be used to fund an elopment; some versions of this story say that she is Elizabeth Trevor-Roper who was pushed down the well by a man whose love she rejected - she was said to be only 16. She is said to run through the corridor. One particular room is said to exhibit spectral behaviour, such as the feeling of someone invisible sat on the edge of a guest's bed. The dual carriageway outside is also said to be haunted - one is a knight in armour in the central reservation, and the other is a woman who rushes out in front of traffic forcing drivers to swerve (some reports say that she is former occupant John Trevor's daughter). There are said to be 15 phantoms in this one building, including Trevor himself, an MP who lived here and whose phantom is described as "very unfriendly", Elizabeth Roper (who died after being pushed down a well) and Judge Jeffreys himself. Visitors have also reported laughter, footsteps and temperature changes too.
