The Portland HotelWest Bars, Chesterfield, Derbyshire S40 1AY 01246 293600 According to CAMRA, there is a ghostly gentleman on the top floor in an unoccupied room, and appears shirtless, but usually his presence is only heralded by a cold sensation and a faint smell of cigar smoke. However, he leaves an impressive of his backside on a freshly made bed which annoys the cleaners! A lady in white has been seen in rooms 101 and 102, and also seen ascending the stairs to reception. There is another presence in the bar; at one time, a female member of the team and her male manager were chatting about the ghostly activity in the pub when he taunted the spirits to "do something." At that moment a glass flew from a high shelf and smashed on the wall next to him. Oon another occasion, a member of the night duty staff was walking through the bar area when a glass flew from a shelf on the back wall, 'cleared the bar by some margin and landed at the feet of the startled woman.' The turret room above the corner entrance is said to harbour the ghost of a soldier who hung himself here. Link: CAMRA |
