Sefton Park Iron Bridge
Mossley Hill Drive, Sefton Park, Liverpool, Merseyside L17 1AJ
A Victorian couple (said by some to be called Oliver and Catherine) have been seen embracing on the bridge every February 14th. It is said they met in secret because their parents disapproved of their relationship. They agreed to elope but she never turned up on the bridge. When the man turned to leave, he saw the girl but his hand passed through her - she had died of cholera at the same time and her dying words were a wish to meet her lover on the bridge.
An alternate version says that Oliver was being forced into an arranged marriage but they agreed to meet on the bridge in 12 months time at 11pm. A year later, Oliver was waiting for his love but she failed to turn up. Just as he was on the point of departing, he saw Catherine at the far end and ran to her but his outstretched arms touched nothing but thin air and his love had vanished. He later found that she had died of cholera the previous night, her last words being 'I must meet my love on the Iron Bridge.'
