The most frequent ghost reports come from the upper rooms, which are now guest bedrooms. A local legend states that "a wealthy Lord of the Manor discovered his daughter was secretly meeting a lower-class servant boy on the grounds. Infuriated by the threat to his family's status, he confined her to an isolated room in the attic eaves. She allegedly perished there from isolation and grief." Guests who stop here have heard the sound of "soft, distinct weeping coming from empty corners of the room" when they awaken, and staff changing sheets have had an overwhelming sense of sorrow and sudden temperature drops. In addition, there have been the sounds of heavy, dragging footsteps pacing across the upstairs floorboards after the pub has closed and the guests are asleep. Stories also abound of heavy wooden chairs being found pulled away from tables, or otherwise found rearranged overnight despite the building being locked up. The pub also reports that, "Staff have recounted instances where heavy wooden doors suddenly click shut and lock tightly from the outside, momentarily trapping people inside rooms until the latch mysteriously releases on its own."
