The spirit here is said to return to the hall after nightfall on Christmas Eve but it is has been seen on other occasions too. According to the story, a French governess in the 18th century called Lucette became pregnant with an army officer who was staying at the hall one Christmas. He promised to return in the New Year but never did and, being in such a condition out of wedlock, was regarded with disdain until she threw herself to her death from a nearby stone bridge. She was buried in an unmarked grave. In some versions of the tale, the officer returned and learned her fate before dying in a duel with Lucette's brother. Now, Lucette walks the hall and also the stone bridge. But some say that she has been seen all year round; one guest even said that he saw her sitting on the end of their bed.
