Lumley Castle Hotel

Ropery Lane, Chester-le-Street, County Durham DH3 4NX
0191 389 1111

The ghost of Lily of Lumley has been reported here; she and her husband Sir Ralph Lumley lived here and were Lollards. While he was away, two Catholic priests visited her to convince her to convert. When she told them she had no intention of doing so, she was murdered and threw her body in a well in the cellar. The priests found a local lady, who died soon afterwhile and sent her to a convent, trying to convince Sir Ralph that his wife had left to become a nun. Some versions of the aftermath say that Sir Ralph did not believe this and had the priests executed - ghostly monks have also been seen in the castle grounds. A young girl aged 5 or 6 in 19th century garb, noises, objects moving, lights and a voice whispering in someone's ear have all been experienced, too. Additionally, a headless horseman is said to ride from the Castle to Finchale Priory, usually on stormy nights. Sounds of clashing swords, men dying and horses charging have been heard in the castle grounds and nearby woodlands.
