Beamish Hall

In the late 18th century, Bridget Bellasyse was betrothed to marry Bobby Shafto (who is reputed, but unlikely to have been the owner of the hall at the time) but his eagerness for travel led him to postpone their marriage until he returned from his latest excursion. When he returned he married Anne Duncombe instead and Bridget died two weeks of a broken heart after hearing the news (though some sources say that she perished a fortnight beforehand of TB). The "Grey Lady" seen looking out of the bridal suite and walking along the lower reaches of the hall is said to be her, and a fictitious addendum to the basic story is that a servant saw her when she tried to visit him at the hall and she hid in a casket which locked after her. Her cries were muffled and unable to escape, she passed away, her body being found decades later. There is an impressive catalogue of other apparitions here; a lady in a pink hat and Elizabethan garb in the Eden Bar; "Charlotte" in the reception area; another (?) "Grey Lady"; a man who gazes out a window (despite his clothing dating from the Victorian era, some choose to identify him as Bobby Shafto); and perhaps spectral children in the attic where strange lighting effects have occurred. There are also tales of footsteps in the Shafto Hall, dogs barking, doors slamming, running feet and dark shadows that pass through walls.

Update: 3/3/20: Amy Tocu, staff member at the Hotel, informs me that, "The last incident was in our Eden breakfast room. A member of the team heard cutlery dropping on the floor, used camera to try and capture what they thought was a little girl in the room."
