The Black HorseRed Row, Beamish, Stanley, Co Durham, DH9 0RW 01207 232569 Recent occurrences include beer glasses being smashed, doors slamming mysteriously, muddy boot prints being found on freshly mopped floors and other "baffling happenings late at night after the pub doors are closed to the public." It isn't clear if an apparition has been seen, but in the past a figure has been noted; indeed, the first record of a presence dates back to 17th November 1807 when an "imposing white figure appeared to be peering" over the sleeping residents of the building, and was spotted roaming the corridors during the early hours of the morning. It is thought that the ghost is George Ridley, who used to live here with his wife and nine children and another family. He worked in the local mine and vanished without explanation in 1803.
